Turn BS Into Building Science
There is a growing understanding that spray foam is an unreliable, toxic, and expensive approach to insulation. As efficiency becomes more of a focal point in the building equation there is an onus to build airtight structures.
While that means heating and air conditioning costs can be minimized, airtight building envelopes create inherent challenges that need to be re-assessed.
Foam insulation has long been viewed as a belt and suspender to enhance building tactics in the quest for air tightness. As known failure rates of foam systems rise, so too does optionality for alternatives. Today, we can make a better choice – a smarter choice.
The Smart Wall is the Alternative to Foam and Other Insulations
In the quest for air tightness, builders typically elevate foam insulation as the best solution. The imperative for alternative insulation is at an all-time high as foam system failure rates rise. The smart wall is the efficient and sustainable solution to this problem.
Smart Wall Features
Our customized Smart Wall system is made of non-toxic wool materials that create a long-lasting building enclosure, that delivers comfort, health, and efficiency all without fear of rot, mold, or other maintenance and health issues.
Airtight, Low-Energy, Biophilic Wall System
Inevitably moisture will find its way into wall cavities. What happens next is paramount to building intelligently. The Smart Wall is an airtight, low-energy, biophilic approach to wall system design and construction.
This system allows for the efficiency of air tightness without disrupting inherent vapor drive due to the high integrity of sheep’s wool and the intrinsic characteristics of the industry-leading technology behind Pro Clima membranes.
By placing Pro Clima membranes on either side of a wall cavity, the Mento (exterior), provides an airtight vapor open to the outside (up to 36 perms), while the Intello Plus provides the airtight vapor barrier to the inside (0.17-13.2 perms).
As a reinforced membrane, Intello Plus replaces standard blow-in insulation netting and offers exponentially more integrity to the wall. Depending on the moisture levels, its perm rate will vary while remaining airtight.
Made of wood, Gutex fiberboards also allow diffusion as they regulate the interior relative humidity by virtue of their ability to absorb and release up to 15 % of their weight in moisture – without the loss of insulation capacity.
For superior insulation in the cavity, Havelock Wool insulation actively manages moisture without adverse effects. Wool fibers inherently absorb and desorb moisture against 65% relative humidity.
Comparison: Smart Wall vs. Others
Why compromise when building the most important part of any structure: the envelope? The smart wall enclosure system addresses an inherent weakness in the quest to achieve air tightness. Along with 475 High Performance Building Supply we are proud to collaborate on a solution to this problem.
Current Code-Minimum Construction
Inefficient, Made of Foam, Fiberglass, Chemicals & VOCs
Current building materials are designed to maximize profit, not comfort and safety.
- Developed by petroleum and chemical industries
- Made to tear down in 30 years
- (Presumed) safe when covered by drywall
- Inefficiencies corrected by cranking the heat and AC
- Works against nature in an attempt to battle encroaching mold growth
- Manufactured to maximize profit
The Smart Wall
A smart wall is one that’s safe at every stage before and after construction.
- Efficiency, resiliency, sustainability, safety, and comfort built into the very fabric of the building.
- Serious building science to address the global climate crisis.
- Will last for generations.
- You don’t need safety gear to protect you from these building materials.
- Works with nature to handle water and moisture, eliminating the risk of mold and rot.
- Natural and high performance.
